Sur la gauche les esprits malfaisants s’enfuient. Au centre le Commerce et le Travail sont en bonne place au côté de personnages sacrifiant à la patrie.

The subject is a glorification of America, where the allegories of Fortune, Fame, Truth unveiled by Time, Glory, Law are disseminated in the clouds. On the left the evil spirits flee. In the center Trade and Labor are prominently placed alongside characters sacrificing to the fatherland.

L'artiste Tommaso Juglaris 1844 - 1925 originaire d'Italie (Moncalieri) fut élève de Thomas Couture à Paris puis émigra aux USA ou il eût une riche carrière de décorateur muraliste. Notamment pour les fresques des Muses (1886) sur le dôme du Michigan State Capitol à Lansing et le Grecian Festival ornant les murs de la bibliothèque publique de Franklin, Massachusetts.

The artist Tommaso Juglaris 1844 - 1925 originally from Italy (Moncalieri) was a pupil of Thomas Couture in Paris then emigrated to the USA where he had a rich career as a muralist decorator. Notably for the frescoes of the Muses (1886) on the dome of the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing and the Grecian Festival adorning the walls of the public library in Franklin, Massachusetts.

en 1901 rappelé en Amérique pour décorer la première bibliothèque J. Gordon Ray (première bibliothèque publique des États-Unis) à Franklin Massachusetts . Les travaux durent jusqu'en novembre 1904 avec la décoration des murs de la salle de lecture (frise de scènes d'une bacchanale) et de l'entrée de la bibliothèque (allégorie des heures de la journée, sommeil, travail et plaisir, sur fond or). Puis il retourna aux États-Unis (1906) pour régler le différend économique qu'il avait avec le peintre et son élève, Henry Hammond Gallison qui, eux aussi, avaient participé à la décoration de la bibliothèque. Après 1906, il s'installe définitivement en Italie.

in 1901 recalled to America to decorate the first J. Gordon Ray Library (first public library in the United States) in Franklin Massachusetts. The work lasted until November 1904 with the decoration of the walls of the reading room (frieze of scenes from a bacchanal) and the entrance to the library (allegory of the hours of the day, sleep, work and pleasure, on gold background). Then he returned to the United States (1906) to settle the economic dispute he had with the painter and his pupil, Henry Hammond Gallison, who had also participated in the decoration of the library. After 1906, he settled permanently in Italy.

L'esquisse présentée ici est datée de 1905, sa dernière période américaine où Juglaris travaille aux décors de la bibliothèque de Franklin. 

dans la salle de lecture un grand plafond où des moulures ovales encadre un grand vide...

notre esquisse paraît être, très probablement, un projet pour cet espace. Projet abandonné? ou détruit? ou masqué par une couche de peinture blanche?
